Located in the South of France, and once part of the kingdom of northern Spain, Roussillon is one of the most exciting wine regions in the world. With Perpignan as its beating heart, it has been shaped over centuries by nature, history and its people. Nestled within a natural amphitheatre open to the Mediterranean sea, Roussillon’s vineyards are surrounded by mountain ranges and benefit from an ideal climate, perfect for the cultivation of vines. The region’s tumultuous geological history and resulting soil and subsoil diversity have created an extraordinary patchwork of micro-terroirs.
With 14 AOP and 2 IGP certifications, 24 varietals principally used, and the ability to produce dry still wines as well as Vins Doux Naturels (fortified sweet wines), Roussillon offers a wide range of wines, each with its own distinctive and unique character. Combining ancestral and modern-day skills, Roussillon has a strong viticultural heritage and its pioneering winemakers are at the forefront of organic and biodynamic practices. Wines of Roussillon bring together 2,166 small, family-owned vineyards including almost 400 private producers, 25 wine growers’ cooperatives and just under 100 wine merchants.
