Fab at fifty: AOP Collioure rouge
This year, AOP Collioure rouge is celebrating its 50th birthday. It was the first Roussillon dry wine to be recognised through this European designation and has aged rather well, now also available in white and rosé.
AOP Collioure’s vineyards overlook the Mediterranean sea from a balcony of grey schist dating back from the primary (Cambrian) era. Ravines and hills alternate in rolling waves and vines are established on very narrow terraces. The combination of these unique soils, intense sunlight and proximity to the sea makes for a very special micro-climate.
The main varietals used for the red wines are black Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and complementary varietals include black Carignan and Cinsault.
AOP Collioure reds range from ample, fresh and fruity, alive with notes of pit-fruits and sea air, to rich and complex wines with aromas of spices and ripening fruits.
The AOP Collioure is nowadays also Rosé (since 1991) and White (since 2003).
