UK becomes 4th importer of Roussillon AOP wines
The love affair between Roussillon AOP wines and the UK continues as shown by the recently released export figures for the first half of 2022. The United Kingdom, ranked as the 7th importer of Roussillon wines in 2021, moved up three places in the ranking to become the 4th largest importer of the region’s AOPs (dry and fortified).
The UK now brings in 12% of the total export volumes from Roussillon, at an average price of 3.63 euros per 75cl bottle. Dry AOP styles form the largest part of these exports to the UK, at an average price per bottle at 3.16 euros. The average price per bottle for fortified sweet wines from Roussillon is 11.94 euros (the same as in 2021). The UK is currently the third importer of Roussillon Vins Doux Naturels.
Eric Aracil, co-director in charge of exports for the Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins du Roussillon, comments: “The UK is a key export market for Roussillon wines and one where value growth is strong. The British trade has a unique understanding of what makes a region’s wines special and meets their customers’ interest in wines with a story, sense of place and strong winemaking tradition. Roussillon’s credentials in sustainability and organic practices also add to the appeal of our wines. We are seeing an increase in listings in the UK with more producers being represented by British importers. As a generic body, we will continue to invest in the UK market throughout 2023 to support the good progress made by our wineries and their partners.”
